How We Turned a 19th Century Home into a Profitable Airbnb (And What Homeowners Can Learn)

Transforming an older home into a comfortable, welcoming space takes vision, patience, and quality craftsmanship. My wife and I experienced this firsthand when we renovated a historic home built in 1897 and turned it into a successful short-term rental.

While this project took place outside California, the lessons apply to many older homes in Placerville and the Sierra foothills, where character homes often need thoughtful updates to improve function and value.

Here’s how we brought this historic property back to life.

Starting from Scratch

After getting married in 2020, we didn’t yet have a place of our own. I owned a small home from my military years, and after living temporarily with family, we decided to relocate and renovate it.

The house had great character—but like many older homes, it needed significant improvements before it could be comfortable or rentable.

Major Plumbing Upgrade: Sewer Line Replacement

Within weeks of moving in, we discovered a major issue: the sewer line needed replacement.

We installed a new wood-burning stove in the living room. This upgrade:

To prepare the home for guests, we installed:

  • A new front door

  • Electronic keypad lock with deadbolt

This made check-in simple and secure for short-term renters while improving curb appeal with a welcoming new exterior color.

The original pedestal sink offered little functionality. We replaced it with a vanity that provided:

  • Counter space for daily use

  • Storage for toiletries

  • A more modern, comfortable layout

We started small by listing a single bedroom before transitioning the entire home to a short-term rental. To create a unique experience, we named the property “The French Cottage.”

Positive reviews quickly built momentum, and the home became a popular stay due to:

The project not only created additional income but also gave us valuable experience in renovation, design, and customer service.
